After weeks of experimentation we finally came to a final design. This light fixture is inspired by the natural form of a shell. The spacings inbetween the plywood strips are designed to let a small amount of light through creating a shutter like effect around a room. The metal back plate was polished to help reflect more light through the light fixture. Plywood was chosen for its flexable capabilities and its ablility to create organic forms similar to those of a shell.
After minor improvements to the design of the fixings we began to make the final piece, which was to be a wall lamp fitting made of polished steel and ply wood.
After finalising our design with a focus of reflection, light, shadow and organic form, we began making. We used thin ply wood because of it’s natural flexibility as well as it’s warm, natural feel.
A well as the paper shell model, many other ideas influenced the finial design. These included circular forms, using a round central base, twisting and folding the paper, and layering it with PVA to add strength.
Matt began to combine different ideas by using the same organic form, and continuing to use paper as a material, but incorporating the element of light and shadow from previous models. Although it has the warm, glowing effect we intended, it doesn’t cut the light as well as the plain version, which we preferred for the contemporary, refined finish.
Similarly to the ceiling lamp, Elizabeth created a model to see how the wall lamp would turn out – the shape was good and was easier to assemble however it turned out smaller than planned.
Elizabeth and Luchia made a full size model of the ceiling lamp using paper, masking tape and wire.
This is a possible design for a wall lamp that includes the ‘shell’ like fans. There are three different sized fans and each have a light inside them – the paper create glowing effect.
This design hangs from the ceiling by a single cord. there are four ‘shell’ like fans that are arranged in a circle – they will be made out of paper (or other materials after modelling process) which will create a glowing appearence when lit up. The paper model for this product is being made by Elizabeth and Luchia.
